Determinants of Bangladesh’s Leather Exports to Its Major Trade Partners: A Panel Gravity Model Approach

The purpose of this research is to study the determinants export, import and overall trade performance. article employed panel gravity model along with analytical approaches fixed-effects, random-effects, Poisson Pseudo-Maximum-Likelihood (PPML) Heckman selection models. This analysis based on a data set from 1989 2015 (27 years) for total 20 selected largest leather importing partners. findings are consistent Heckscher–Ohlin (H–O) theory, meaning that Bangladesh could chase comparative advantage in industry through effective planning efficient utilization its abundant population 163 million. It demonstrated wealthier nations likely Bangladeshi sector. But key problem ways presence high transport costs. Among major causes high-trade costs cumbersome complex cross-border trading practices, which also increase possibility corruption. Moreover, products negatively influenced by COVID-19. These problems issues need be addressed facilitate Bangladesh’s exports. Also, founding member China’s Belt Road Initiative (BRI). Exporting Chinese consumer markets using network connectivity boost other participating countries BRI would create considerable growth potential Bangladesh. To end, issue technological developments innovations prioritized. work provides both industrial policy directions future means an application model. There some methodological concluding remarks have generated insights lessons useful development across world.
